Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue recently took in 22 pigs from ONE shelter. If you are considering adopting in the DC metropolitan area, please consider sending them an application!

They do not allow minors to apply for guinea pigs.
They do not allow applicants who have outside animals (excluding farm animals).
They insist on adequately large housing for the guinea pig, such as the housing described at http://www.guineapigcages.com/.
They do not adopt out single guinea pigs.

that just like those poor puppies, guinea pigs in pet stores also can come from mills? And that someone who br33ds even a few litters a year, then sells (or gives away) the pigs online or to a store is still guaranteeing the death of a pig in a shelter?

I say what may seem a harsh statement because there are many, many more guinea pigs then there are homes. And so if you have found this blog, please don't get your guinea pig from a petstore, 4-her, school br33ding program, or someone who has otherwise contributed to the guinea pig population on purpose, because there are hundreds of guinea pigs posted below who are in desperate need of a forever home.

Parents really need to prepare to be primary care-giver for a pet, and anticipate being sole care-giver should the child lose interest. Otherwise the animal will suffer.

Fudge is a 9 month old male with short brown/tan fur.

Marshmellow is a 7 week old male with smooth white fur. "Marshmellow was surrendered to the vbspca because his family did not want him. He is friendly and likes to be held." It sounds like he comes from the same litter as Alex; he also has experience with children.

This is a courtesy post for an amazing woman who rescued some guinea pigs from a pretty sad craigslist ad for four "hampsters." The four piggies of the original ad have turned into seven, between adoptions and a prolific pregnancy. Now the adopter has eleven pigs, and she started out just looking for one! The original adopter is hoping that all of these pigs can get the kind of great one on one attention they deserve. If you have a POSITIVELY SEXED/healthy guinea pig (use this site Boy or Girl? or have a Cavy Savvy Vet confirm the sex of your pig for you), you can bring your guinea pig and see which of the pigs it gets along with best! Let's meet all the lucky piggies!!

Peanut and Bagel, bonded pair of playful male babies. Bagel is more laid back, Peanut is more active. Still a little shy with people (typical of their age).

"Peanut & Bagel are our two baby boys. They are the best of friends but still a little shy around people. They should move to a new home together if at all possible, because they often cry when they're apart from each other. Bagel is the more laid-back of the two; he loves to lounge around and watch all the action from the comfort of his pigloo. Peanut is always walking around looking for something new to eat or trying to chat up his other cagemates. Both like to run laps around the cage."

Poppy, five month old male. Curious, active, skittish when being picked up, but settles in lap (typical of age, good soon that he settles). Should go to home without dogs/children.

"Poppy is the older brother of Peanut & Bagel. We'd guess him to be about 5 months old. He got his name back when we thought he was a girl. He's very curious and is always the first one to run to the cage wall when I come in the room. He always has to know what's going on and constantly begs for food. Poppy is skittish and should probably not go to a home with children or dogs. He doesn't much like being picked up, but seems comfortable with being held once he settles down."

Fiyero is 9-12 months old, very well socialized, gentle, gets along well with other pigs. Past impaction issues probably due to old environment.

"Fiyero is the father of all these babies and probably my favorite of these pigs. While he's definitely an adult, he's still pretty young...I'd say he's 9 months to a year old perhaps. He's a big sweetie who loves to be held and petted! He's very gentle and will cuddle up in your lap for long periods at a time. I adore this pig and would love to keep him myself...Fiyero gets along very well with most of the other boys and should have a (male) friend in his new home or go with one of my other boars. When we first brought Fiyero home, we thought that he had a fecal impaction, so we cleaned him up. He's been here over two months and hasn't had any more problems, so I think it was just a hygiene problem in his previous environment."

Freddy and Georgia, bonded female pair of babies, sweet, active, and playful.

"Freddy & Georgia are the "twins," so called because their markings are so similar--just different shades of brown. These pigs are sweet and playful and love to do everything together. These two will run laps around the cage until they're exhausted."

Patches, female baby, well socialized to people, curious, loves to explore, friendly.

"Patches is our beauty--she's got a brown patch over one eye and one black ear. She's very friendly and does well being held. Patches is very inquisitive and during floor time likes to explore everywhere--she often follows our four year old pig around to new areas she hasn't been to yet. She...is one of the bolder girls coming up to the wall to beg or eat from our hands. She loves to sit in the food dish while she eats and is getting so big that when she does, the other pigs have to nudge her so she'll move and they can eat"

Regular readers will know that I foster for
Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue,
and love doing so because it's an amazing organization.

I want to use this space to ask for some help for the rescue. It's been such a difficult summer for homeless guinea pigs that the rescue is overwhelmed with pigs, and is in desperate need for funds.

At the moment we are unable to take in any additional pigs to the rescue. PLEASE consider donating to Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue to assure the safety and health of guinea pigs in area kill shelters.

Simon was born at the regional ASPCA on March 2nd, 2008. He is an American cross with silkie type hair. He is very sweet and laid back for a baby. Wow, normally they are such zoomers and nibblers! *NEW* Pascal and Raoul are 2 month old brothers who were born in the rescue on May 5th. Raoul is on the right and Pascal is on the left in their photo. They were born to a mother from a sad case; she had been living outside on a farm in a "small overcrowded cage" and she was already close to delivery. Soon after being rescued she gave birth to five pigs, including these two. They love popcorning and playing hide and seek/chase/tag in the hay in their cage! With time they will calm down and love lap time as much as floor time.

Makayla and Zoe are just the most gorgeous pair of bonded adult (2 y.o.) female guineas. Makayla is that ball of teddy fuzz on the right, and Zoe is the pretty girl on the left. Zoe is a bit scared of being picked up, but does enjoy lap time. They came to the rescue from the local animal shelter; their children were no longer taking care of them and so they were surrendered. They love their daily veggies and romping around in their hay.

Anneka and Mariel are bonded sisters who have lived together since they were abandoned when young. They've now only been surrendered to the rescue because of their care-giver's bad allergies. How sad for everyone involved. Annika is the lovely girl on the left. They both have beautiful dark eyes and are "sweet and cuddly."
