Woodbridge, VA: Very cute guinea girl being rehomed due to allergies (an advantage of adopting from a rescue--they can give you allergy tips as well as let you audition your nose with the cavies). She comes with the cage, food, bedding, shampoo (make sure it's appropriate for guinea pigs), and her water bottle.

Craigslist Appreciation

Just wanted to share a CL post I really liked. Vote for it as best of as long as it lasts here.

It was written in response to a line of another ad reading, "pretty brown and white guinea pig needs new home where the children will remember to care for it."

To quote the excellent CL ad in full:

"No guinea pig needs a home where CHILDREN will remember to care for it. Guinea pigs are not toys; they are living creatures who deserve the consistent care of a responsible ADULT.

If you wouldn't want to depend on a child for your meals and the cleanliness of your surroundings, please don't subject innocent animals to that fate.

If you want your children to learn responsibility, model responsible behavior by taking great care of the pets you bring into your family. Kids can help, but the responsibility is for adults. It worked for my kids--and our guinea pigs!"

MD-Luna's House-Falling in love in foster care!

Luna's House, MD: ADOPTED! Tommy and Tulip! Tommy and Tulip used to have separate listings, but I believe they became a couple in foster care.

I'm going to be lazy and just copy and paste their bio, but it's mainly because I couldn't say it nearly as well:

They come with a cage (probably too small), water bottle (should have two), wheel (shouldn't have at all), house, log (throw it out, these are toxic), ceramic bowl, care book (can't be too accurate, stones for teeth (?), hay, food, and bedding.

LISTING REMOVED. Middle River (Baltimore), MD: (repost) Two baby girls and one one year old female (mother) available for adoption + two y.o. father. Description of babies: one is black and white, the other is black, white and brown. Mother: brown and white w. red eyes. Father: black, brown and white. Have "smooth, soft, silky, short hair."

"All the pigs are great with kids, my kids handle them every day" and then it goes on to read, "My daughter did put the dad back in the cage with the mom..so there is a possible chance she may be pregnant again." Have a good vet, this will be a terrible physical strain on mom. Small fee.

VA-Virginia Beach SPCA-two males

Virginia Beach SPCA, VA: LISTING REMOVED Prince and LISTING REMOVED King!

Prince is a six month old male guinea pig, with a black smooth coat. He has been at the shelter since 2/17 and was surrendered because of his owners' landlord. He has experience with children, but not with cats or dogs.

Because of the names and similar bios, I would imagine King was surrendered by the same people, so they may be bonded. The only difference between King and Prince is that King is one year old.

Tulip is a highly personable, wonderfully sweet guinea pig. She is a year and a half old and loves her veggies and hay. Tulip is quite good with children and is easy to handle. She is well socialized to people. She sounds (and looks) like a keeper!

LISTING REMOVED. Forestville, MD: Sounds like a gorgeous guinea boy--black with a white mohawk. A friendly boy. Low adoption fee includes piggy, cage, food and bedding. Pig is being rehomed because poster is having a baby, does not want the pig to be scared by the stork.

LISTING REMOVED. Middle River (near Baltimore), MD: Small rehoming fee for: tricolor two y.o. dad (black, brown and white); brown and white mom with red eyes, one y.o.. Two baby girls, one is black and white, the other is black, white and brown. Seems like the poster wants them to go together? Not sure.

LISTING REMOVED. Dundalk, MD: Sad story, end result: mother and daughter pigs, bonded, available for adoption come March 1st. Poster is beginning to advertise now in the hopes of helping the adopter with any questions about guinea pig care--a good opportunity! Does want the respondent to have knowledge about guinea pig care. Poster has a C&C cage, so has high standards for care. Also indicates a high standard for the guinea pigs behavior and health (says they don't bite). Reasonable adoption fee. Pictures available by request.

LISTING REMOVED. Mechanicsville (near Richmond), VA: Photo added to an old ad. Adorable guinea pigs proved too much for the poster's four and five year old kids (16 is about the right age, I would think). Both girls. Very sweet, bonded, must be adopted together. Reasonable adoption fee includes too small cage, hay, food, treats, water bottles, play pen, hidey house, and hay holder.

VA-Fairfax County Animal Services-photo update

VA-Lynchburg Humane Society-Special Needs (possibly lethal) sow, and adult boar

Lynchburg Humane Society, VA: LISTING REMOVED. Rambo and WITH A RESCUE!! Liz! (not bonded)

Rambo is a small adult male who looks like he is getting great care in the animal shelter (no colored bits in the pellets, a brick below the water bottle to absorb water, as well as to help Rambo keep his nails worn down, Carefresh bedding). His bio says that he isn't in to being held though, because he has never experienced that type of love. With patience, sometimes these love-starved guineas become the biggest lap-hounds of them all!

WITH A RESCUE!! A heads up on the darling, beautiful Liz. She is a special needs pig, and some of the symptoms described in her bio (head tilt and poor vision) are those shared by lethal pigs. A brief but informative summary of the specific concerns for caring for lethal pigs can be found at the GuineaLynx care guide, here. I highly recommend reading it before adopting a pig such as Liz (though Liz may not be a lethal). Independent of her special needs issues, Liz is described as happy and vocal, and quite active despite her "quirks."
