MD-Talbot Humane-boar
LISTING REMOVED. Talbot Humane doesn't generally have guinea pigs, or at least this shelter doesn't advertise it. But they have a boar in now who they just posted today on PetHarbor, PetHarbor is a search engine like Petfinder. You can find Jerico, the Talbot Humane boar, by looking up his ID number: A006451. He is orange and white, and his age is unknown. It seems like he just came in today though. If they post a picture I'll update.

ETA: This ad has also been posted on GPAN.
LISTING EXPIRED. Gaithersburg, MD: two boars being dumped. They are one year old and one and a half years old. They come with a large cage, food dish and water containers, "play pen type thing" and "travel box." Also any food or bedding left over. If you want the boars you have to tell them what other pets you have -- note, bunchers have lots of pets! And also the ability to lie! You have to pick them up from the poster's home. Not that this couldn't be legitimate, but especially heed the Craigslist warning for this instance.

LISTING EXPIRED. Two bonded boar brothers in Baltimore need a new home. Their small adoption fee includes the cage, water bottle, food dish, and salt lick (never use these for guinea pigs). They're friendly agouti boys who are socialized to people.

In the first and second picture it's the two babies on the right.

POST DELETED. The laziness in this ad fatigues me:
"I have a Male Adult Guinea Pig that I can't keep no more. It has his own cage. I'm just giving it away because I don't have the room for it anymore.
Please email me and let me know if you are interested."

LISTING DELETED. Richmond Sow needs new home. Her caretaker is possibly becoming unemployed, and so she wants to find the guinea girl a more stable home. She is a year old, comes with cage and accessories, and is white, red, and gray. She sounds beautiful! She is a vocal girl who loves to eat. Help her find her forever home!
LISTING EXPIRED. Woodbridge, VA post infuriates me more than any other in the history of time, aside from that other one earlier today in New York.
THIS IS NOT CUTE. THIS IS NOT SAFE.
THIS IS SCARY FOR THE PIG.
THIS IS SCARY FOR THE PIG.

Poster says that the boar, Ralfie, didn't squirm during this process. He had probably gone in to predator mode, and frozen. Ralfie is a vocal, friendly, active boy. He is two years old. HELP OUT THIS GUINEA PIG, please??

ADOPTED! This boar near Norfolk, off Indian River/Virginia Beach, sounds like a real cute sweetheart. He is a classic petstore purchase--->Craigslist dump. It does not seem like this poster is going to screen, which is very worrying. The poster bought the guinea pig for a friend's daughter who didn't take good enough care of him. So she's dumping him on Craigslist for fr33. He comes with a cage, water bottle, two types of bedding, food, and some things that are on the guinea no-list.

MD/DC/VA-Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue
For my 1 0 0 th p o s t I'm going to feature three new sows from a guinea pig rescue that's very close to me. I've owned guinea pigs for less than a year. A friend recommended Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue to me and I adopted two sweet sisters from them. Like all good rescues, they screened like crazy. I did so much research before bringing my girls home, and once I was approved for adoption I felt prepared and relieved--I was going crazy waiting to get my dear piggies!
Then on GuineaLynx someone posted about a guinea pig who, if no one took her in, she would have to be euthanized. And she might need to be put to sleep anyway--her health was very grim. Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue agreed to let me foster her, though her medical bills were extraordinary. When Mr. Adopt A Guinea Pig and I decided we wanted to adopt her, Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue allowed her to be a sanctuary pig. It was an extremely generous decision on the part of the director and fellow members.
And now I'm fostering pigs who actually leave my house one day. Sweet wonderful guinea pigs who would be euthanized if it weren't for Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue. They are an amazing rescue. But this commitment and love for animals is typical of all good rescues. It's hard for me to think that the incredible people I work with are typical too, but I'm learning that's true.
On to their new guinea pigs.

ADOPTED! Cookie is a crested cutie. She is super sweet, two years old and spayed. Do you have a lonely guinea pig looking for a mate? If your guinea pig is named: Cream, Chocolate Chip, Milk, or Sugar, you will receive preference on the grounds of cuteness. I'm lying. I'm lying!

ADOPTED! Emily is an adorable girl. She too is crested. She is a sweet and affectionate two year old. She's also spayed, and looking for a friend. Do you have a lonely boar looking for more? Or a sow who wants some more company now?

ADOPTED! Sara is a beauty who was born in a foster home. She's six months old and spayed. She is a real sweetheart and a cutie to boot. She's hoping to be adopted with a boar named ADOPTED! Huey . If you adopted these two you would have quite the family holiday card!

MD-Baltimore Boar-GPAN
ADOPTED! Not much info here, but there's a two year old boar being offered for adoption in Baltimore, MD. He is described as black and healthy. The boar's name is Bear (I love it), but the poster isn't completely positive on Bear being a Boar-use the sexing page here to double check. And if you're not familiar with GuineaLynx (the website that hosts that page), look around, including the forums. It's an invaluable source of accurate Guinea Pig information.

MD-Small Angels-New Piggies!
Small Angels Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization devoted to the rescuing of small animals. It is composed of a network of foster homes--and the lucky foster home that's caring for these two!
LISTING REMOVED. Alysia and Falon are two beautiful bonded sisters. One's a peruvian and the other is crested--heaven! Alysia is the peruvian, and so she will require special grooming to keep her soft long hair tangle fr33. You can read more about her grooming needs by clicking their link. Their primary caretaker developed serious health problems and so had to give them up--how terrible for everyone involved.
Falon has medium length hair, which is black and brown except for the white aforementioned crest. The two of them are chatty sweethearts, and quite playful. They love veggies and hay, which is a great head start caring for a guinea. These two are such beautiful, sweet guineas who sound obviously well cared for. POST DELETED. Charlottesville, VA: two bonded boars being rehomed because of allergies. Pictures by request. Small adoption fee includes water bottle, cage, food, etc. The boars are loving sweet boys who loved to be cuddled. They aren't yet a year old. One is tan with ruby colored eyes, one is a charming chocolate brown. The adopter is trying to get them picked up immediately. Help these sweet boys out--its not their fault their beautiful soft fur makes a little girl sneeze.

Did your guinea pig come from a pet store?
I t d o e s n 't o c c u r to a lot of people that guinea pigs are out there homeless and in danger of being put to sleep, like dogs and cats. Wonderful animal loving people who want a guinea pig buy them from pet stores, because it's not common knowledge there are whole rescues devoted to these sweet animals. And once they have the pig they love it, of course. Pet store pigs aren't bad or inferior (though they are often malnourished, suffering from scurvy and mites, pregnant and/or missexed). Still, it's a difficult and sad problem--if someone buys a pig from a petstore or breeder they are making a new space for a guinea pig to be mistreated. And an animal in the shelter dies because that guinea pig loving lap has been taken up.
But so you bought a petstore pig, not knowing, and you can't adopt another pig. For whatever reason you can't volunteer at the local shelter or rescue. If you're feeling guilty about the homeless animal population, there is something you can do.
If you sponsor a guinea pig at your local shelter or rescue, you will be saving a life. Petfinder has these buttons on the profiles of animals within participating organizations:
Click on this button to learn more information about their Sponsor-a-Pet program, or go to: http://www.petfinder.com/foundation/sponsorapet.html .
A n o t h e r s u g g e s t i o n is to donate the amount of the adoption fee to a rescue directly. An average adoption fee of $40 covers such a small portion of the care for an animal, so feel fr33 to pledge more! Whatever you can donate will be of great help and use. There is a link to area shelters on the sidebar.
This is not to say that it's okay to buy petstore animals so long as you make a donation--rather, it's just a practical way to reduce any guilt or worries about the high euthanasia rates of homeless animals across the country.

POST REMOVED. Reisterstown, MD: two bonded smooth hair guinea pigs being dumped, small adoption fee. Poster's daughters don't bother with them any more. Small adoption fee includes two cages, water bottles, bedding, food, food bowls, hay, and "huge ball." If that means exercise or hay ball, neither one of these are appropriate for guinea pigs. They're familiar with people.
This post is so typical of what happens to purchased guinea pigs it makes me really, really sad.

VA-Loudoun County Animal Shelter
Woah, lots of guinea pigs at Lououn County Animal Shelter! This shelter offers lots of programs for area residents, and has won multiple awards for its level of animal care. It is, however, a shelter which euthanizes, sadly like many of the shelters I post. Please help out your local animal shelter or rescue by adopting or fostering.
LISTING REMOVED. Oreo is a beautiful abby girl, just one year old. She too was given up at the shelter--she can't have had much time at what she thought was her forever home before being dumped at the shelter. She's a friendly and fun girl looking for the real thing this time.
All photographs taken by Haley Detrich. This is another great way to help out a shelter. Like taking pictures? Take animals' adoption photos pro bono.
*Don't br33d or buy while shelter animals die*
LISTING REMOVED. Max is a gorgeous boar who is just under a year and a half old. He was given up to the shelter, which is so sad to me. He's a cute, fun, and friendly boy looking for a forever home.

LISTING REMOVED. Pumpkin and Peach are a remarkably lovely pair of sows. They're one year old sisters who are super bonded. The first guinea pigs I adopted were a pair of sisters, and it made learning about guinea pigs so much easier -- I didn't have to cope with bonding at the same time I learned it's normal for guinea pigs to eat their own poop.

MD-Luna's House, bonded boars
ADOPTED! Hooray, Danny and Marty have photos and a bio! I wrote about these guys in a Luna's House post earlier today. They are sweet bonded boys. Danny is the white and black one, and Marty is the tan boy. He has long hair here and there. The two are young boys, just over a year old, and they came from a Virginia shelter. They are thriving in their foster home, but they're looking forward to the home they'll have forever -- yours?

Many sad accidents or "accidents" can be avoided this way. *
