MD-Humane Society of Baltimore County-two sows, one boar

The Humane Society of Baltimore County has three gorgeous new boars!

UPDATE: There's been some name swapping. McBane is now Stripes, Farthingstone-Wolfgang is now Pikka, and Stripes is now Tootsie Roll.

UPDATE: Pikka and Tootsie Roll are sows!

ADOPTED! This boy has no name yet. I'm going to call him McBane because I'm sure he's a fighter and I like the Simpsons. His listing says he is a small adult. It's implied that he's a cutie!

ADOPTED! Farthingstone-Wolfgang here (he too doesn't have a name, so I gave him one to match his dignified yet daring appearance) is also small adult.

WITH A RESCUE! Stripes has a HARRY POTTER MARK. And, like Harry, he's an orphan. Won't you take him in? He's two years old, cute and friendly. He was given up because there were too many animals in the house. Makes me worry for those that are left.

VA-NoVa, repeat Craigslist listing.

LISTING REMOVED. These two poor girls in NoVa have just been listed again on CraigsList. Another chance for them to get a decent home! They are two and a half months old, meaning they didn't get much time before being rehomed. Small adoption fee.

Check the blog archives for other recent Craigslist postings.

* AAGP recommends quarantining any new guinea pigs
for 2-3 weeks and confirming the sex yourself.
Many sad accidents or "accidents" can be avoided this way. *

MD-Chesapeake Bay Guinea Pig Rescue

Chesapeake Guinea Pig Rescue is a small foster based network, but their guinea pigs are big and cuddly!

LISTING REMOVED.Alfred and PJ are two of those big and cuddly guineas. PJ is the one in the middle and Alfred is the guinea pig on the right. They are best friends who love to eat. Alfred and PJ are gentle, kind, and love lap time. They sound so sweet from the rest of their description as well. Definitely worth a look.

LISTING REMOVED.Mikey and Cal are two wonderfully happy boys. Cal has very soft fur and a little fur tail-these are so cute. They are obviously very beloved by their fosterers, who describe them like they're dream guineas. They are popcorners and very affectionate. These poor guys are listed as special needs because they have deep scratches which have healed. CBCPR thinks the wounds came from the family cat. Though the wounds are healed, the guinea pigs are still a bit hesitant with people. It sounds like they really deserve a patient, loving forever home.

ADOPTED! Panda and Buster are a sow and boar, respectively. Panda has an especially sad past. Their petfinder bio reads as follows: Panda is a bit camera shy, so she tried to hide UNDER Buster. This pose surprised all three of us. Panda is a gorgeous black and white teddy furball (who looks just like her namesake), while Buster is a handsome white and brown agouti dutch-colored smooth-coated neutered boy. Panda was rescued from the side of an Eastern Shore highway, while Buster was surrendered to a local animal control facility. Panda is a bundle of energy with a bright and happy personality. She is the first one to push her way to the food, and purrs readily when petted. Buster is shy until he comes to know you, but enjoys being stroked and having his nose scratched. He's a purr-bucket when you find just the right spot. They would benefit from a home where they have lots of caring, gentle attention from their people.

What a gorgeous couple!

They also have two babies in their rescue. LISTING REMOVED. Pippin and Linus (ADOPTED!) are four week old cagemates. They could be adopted together, or one would work with an older boar without resulting in dominance issues (The rescue says they could also be adopted alone). They don't have photos, but at four weeks old how could they not be adorable? Pippin is a red and white dutch guinea, and Linus is described as a "crazy-colored short haired piggie with a collar that stands up straight (he looks as though he has a mohawk)."

MD: Local Have-A-Heart Pigs

Have-A-Heart Guinea Pig Rescue is an enormous network of foster homes, spreading through New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. They can always use more, if you're interested! They also crosspost dogs, barnyard animals, cats, rabbits and birds. Plus they keep a lost and found listing of area animals.

Have-A-Heart helped enormously with a very sad cruelty case. They rescued 140 guinea pigs from a Pennsylvania barn, where the guinea pigs were being raised for food. They lived in deplorable conditions, surrounded by maggots and dead guinea pigs. This was in 2006, but Have-A-Heart is still feeling the ramifications. The first two listings I'm linking two are survivors of this horrible situation.

ADOPTED! The first group of guineas from the cruelty case is Penelope, Paige, and Lydon. Lydon is Paige's daughter. They're currently in a foster home in Frostburg, MD. They are used to being around dogs and cats. They have been with the rescue for over a year, which is sad for the piggies, but does mean they are used to interacting with people.

IN NEW JERSEY. FOSTER HOME NEEDED. The other group from the cruelty case is Slyvia and Wheels, and Whippet and Whiskers. They are mother/daughter pairs, and must be adopted in pairs. They have also been in the rescue for over a year, and are used to dogs and cats.

ADOPTED! I love this photo of Haley and Cindy. They were given up because the kids lost interest in them. As I wrote before, if you're going to get your kid something, get them a bike. The bike doesn't get lonely all by itself in the garage. They're in Shepardstown, MD. They're older guineas (just 3 1/2) which means they'll have a harder time getting adopted. I find an older guinea much more open to laptime and being pet. Please don't pass them over.

DC-two Craigslist ads

LISTING EXPIRED. Three Girls in D.C. Only two pictured, third photo at link The photos are terrible, but you can tell they're beautiful abbys. Comes with a three level cage. A three level store-bought cage is completely unsuitable for guinea pigs; they need width, not height. The cage they are pictured in is way too small. They are all said to be girls-make sure to verify. This ad screams of a Petstore rethink and dump. Unclear on whether there is adoption fee or not. Gorgeous girls. They don't deserve this.

LISTING EXPIRED. Two more girls in D.C. Wonderfully reasonable adoption fee which includes cage, food and bedding. Poster works too much so feels she can't give them the time they deserve. Canterbury is pictured below, second guinea has no picture.

VA-Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA

Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA has pictures of two guinea pigs with no accompanying information. Very worrying. Can someone help out the poor cavies?

If you want to try and identify them when you call, the black and white one's picture was saved as Smigee, and the brown one was saved as LouLou.

ADOPTED!

ADOPTED!

Also worrying, the SPCA says they don't need much space. Knowing how many people give up their animals because they "don't have room," that doesn't seem true. Plus, two guinea pigs need 2x4ft of space, minimum, as well as space to have supervised time playing on the floor, daily.

VA-Virginia Beach SPCA 5 Guinea Pigs

The Virginia Beach SPCA has five guinea pigs available for adoption:

LISTING REMOVED. Simba is a 14 month old boy who was given up because his owners had no time/room for him. How could they not spend hours every day just staring at this handsome boy? Simba is going to have a harder time in the shelter because of his ruby colored eyes. I still don't get that-PEW's fur is just as soft!

LISTING REMOVED. Jules is an 18 month old girl. She looks so cute and petite! She was given up because her owners had no time/room for her. Hopefully she won't have to suffer for their decision very long, and she will find a loving forever home that knows a guinea pig is a lifelong pet.

LISTING REMOVED. Panda is so handsome. He's a three year old guinea pig who is bonded with Pumkin. They were given up because of allergies. Please research any pet before you bring him, her, or them into your home.

LISTING REMOVED. Pumkin is listed as a 10 month old boy who is bonded with Panda. He likes dark leafy greens and has a gorgeous white crest. I'm probably wrong...but Pumkin is sort of showing the shape of an early pregnant sow. I think it's just the way he's standing...regardless, just remember that guinea pigs are regularly missexed, especially when you buy them at a pet store (even ones that only sell males).

LISTING REMOVED. Powder is a seven month old girl who is illustrating a big guinea caretaking no no. NEVER keep your guinea on wire floors. They can break the bones in their feet, get bumblefoot which might lead to amputation, and it's just not easy for them to walk with their delicate footpads. Powder was given up because her owner had not time/room for her. This beautiful poor girl...she is completely innocent and vulnerable.

VA-Fairfax, 1 girl 2 boys

Fairfax County Animal Services has three guinea pigs listed as strays. It always worries me when guinea pigs are listed as strays. Guinea pigs absolutely can't live outdoors.

WITH A RESCUE! Aw crap. The curse of the bad picture. Below is a female guinea pig, listed as white? I'm not sure. Job for a rescue or a good guinea person. Help this girl out. Not her fault she has a bad photo, but she'll have to pay. She's on PetHarbor under "I lost my pet," ID #A023821.

WITH A RESCUE! Bob is so handsome. What a gorgeous guy. He's not a Pink Eyed White (PEW), so he'll fare better than many white guineas, but because he's listed as a stray he won't show up in most search results. His ID is #A024090 on PetHarbor.

LISTING REMOVED. The below guy is named Yayo. What a great name! And what a great crest. This boar is incredibly handsome, and very adoptable, but because he's listed as a stray he won't show up on most search results. He's #A024091 on Petharbor.

MD-Small Angels Rescue

Small Angels Rescue is a network of foster homes caring for small animals, including guinea pigs. They are always looking for foster homes, so click on the link if you're interested. They are also looking for Twilight Homes for special needs or sanctuary piggies. This is a great opportunity-I do the same thing for MGPR.You care for a piggie who is not suitable for adoption because of medical needs, but Small Angels provides vet care, a cage, and other supplies. The foster parent provides food, bedding, and loving attention to the guinea pig. It's a way to foster for piggies who really need it, but you won't have to part with the pig after getting attached.

ADOPTED! Ace is an amazingly photogenic piggie. I think he was a male model in a past life. Or this one! The poor guy is six months old and was left in a box outside a shelter. He is a sweetie who loves to zoom around. He should go to a home with another piggie. If you have a gal piggie you could make a handsome couple by bringing Ace to his forever home-yours!

LISTING REMOVED. (now paired with another pig) I love Brent! He's an adult who was rescued from an animal shelter. Before coming to the shelter he lived alone, in a child's room, in a too small cage. Poor guy! It is so important to keep a cage in a main room, and never in a young child's room. He is thriving in the excellent care of his foster home-imagine how wonderful he'll be in his forever home. Brent's ear somehow got ripped in two-it has since healed. This doesn't speak to a very good past. Help him have a wonderful future!

LISTING REMOVED. Pedro and Salamon are amazing looking guinea pigs. Look at the dewlap on Salamon. I've never seen one like this: Salamon is one of the best looking guinea pigs I've seen. I just want to hold this guy to my chest and give him chinnies. These poor boys thought they found their forever home, but they were returned because their owners moved to a country that had a six month quarantine. Poor Pedro is a special needs Piggie because of dental issues (see his link for details). They love to popcorn and play, and love their veggies. Salamon is really outgoing, and Pedro is a bit more laid back. They love laptime-it is a valuable thing to have TWO guinea pigs who love lap time.

LISTING REMOVED. Sinbad and Corsair (in addition to having awesome names) are described as a "sweet and spunky pair of boys." Corsair (left) is a texel, and Corsair (right), is a crested. What unique guineas! They like play time and are people friendly. Both boys are neutered, which is great for their longterm health.

Vince is another lap piggy. He loves to be scratched behind his ear and loves his veggies. He is laid back and cuddly, and 18 months old. He is looking for a piggy friend, and since he's neutered, he would make a great match with a lady piggy. UPDATE: The poor guy is now special needs. He needs medicine for some kidney problems, but doesn't really exhibit symptoms.

MD/DC/VA-MGPR Guineas

Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue is an amazing rescue network of foster homes. My boyfriend and I make up one of them! Right now we have a nine month old abby and her month old daughter. They aren't available yet because they have to be spayed. MGPR spays and neuters all their guinea pigs, which is great. It stops the guinea pigs from contributing to the over population problem, and there are important longterm health benefits. If you're interested in fostering for them check out the link-they are always looking for good homes.

Here are the guinea pigs that are presently available. More guinea pigs are going up soon.

ADOPTED! Darling Possum has been in the rescue for way too long! He's a five month old super active, friendly boy. He loves floor time and other piggies, so he has to go to a Forever Home with other piggie pals.

ADOPTED! I've met Lambert and he is so cute, and so tiny. He's a three month old and was also born in one of the foster homes. Poor guy, his brother was already adopted. He would do well paired with a sow.

ADOPTED! Henry is three months old and was born in one of the foster homes. He was a big baby and is going to get bigger! He's looking for a lady friend.

ADOPTED! Huey is a cutie. He is seven months old. Like Henry, he's also looking for a lady friend. And, of course, the Forever Home that is lucky enough to get this dear boy.

VA-Cave Spring Piggie Rescue Guineas

Cave Spring Piggie Rescue is a rescue run by employees of a veterinary clinic. The rescue is based in Roanoke, VA. They receive their guineas from shelters, where the guineas then get medical checkups and treatment. Check out their site if you're interested in fostering as well!

ADOPTED! I think Dooney is so beautiful. Those markings are amazing. If anyone reading this adopts her, please send me pictures! The poor girl has had a hard time. Her owner died, and she and her sister were found by animal control. Her sister passed away as well. Poor Dooney! She is spayed, and described as "very sweet and kind." Dooney is two years old.

LISTING REMOVED. Jo Jo is probably the brother of Powder, pictured below. He's very sweet and easy going, but might need some time before he opens up completely in his forever home.

Powder is a medium sized adult who is social and people friendly. He is learning about proper veggies, and thriving in his foster home!

LISTING REMOVED. Speedy and Dale are two sweetheart boys. They came in to the rescue when they were three weeks old, and are now about six months. They were born to a pregnant pet store piggie, and the owner responsibly found a place for them at the rescue instead of giving them back to the store. A member of the rescue said "They are fantastic little guys, very social, kind and get along great."

Sprinkle
doesn't have a picture up yet. He is one year old and came from a shelter. He loves floortime and is very social. He always seems happy--he sounds like the perfect guinea pig! The poor boy has chunks missing out of his ears; he can't have had a happy past. This can be one of the results of overcrowding guinea pigs in a too small cage. They recommend him for an experienced guinea person.
