VA-GPAN, Boar

One year old healthy boar needs a new home ASAP because family is moving. His name is Spot and he's multicolored. Not much info on this one-can anyone help out this boy?

MD-Craigslist, boar

LISTING EXPIRED. In Rockville, MD, people also don't know how to take care of guinea pigs. They are offering a guinea pig and hamster for fr33. The guinea pig is described is looking like a miniature cow (mine look like that and they aren't even white and black spotted, like this guy). He also has a little bit of orange-sounds like a cutie. This boar is happy, sociable, and likes kids. He comes with a cage, hay, food, water bottle and-here's the rub-a feeder which you only have to fill up with food every three weeks: "very convenient." Yikes.

A Happy Adoption Story

Well, I started thinking that posting so many homeless guinea pigs could get depressing. So I made a shout out to my good e-friends at GuineaLynx for some happy adoption stories. The first Adoption Profile I'm going to share is about RavenShade and two of her piggies.

Ravenshade has helped the homeless guinea pig population by donating time, supplies, and money to rescues/shelters. She also transports guinea pigs to their forever homes [like to drive? Help a piggy train!] and encourages people not to br33d or buy. The origins of Jules and Neal are local. Jules is from Montgomery County Humane Society and Neal is from Small Angels.

What made you opt to adopt: "There's no reason to br33d or buy when so many pigs of every shape, color, age, gender, br33d and size are looking for good homes. We did once br33d and that cost us the lives of some very special pigs."

How she prepared for the pigs: "I've had pigs a long time, so I already had the supplies. I created quarantine cages for them when they first arrived (already had Steve and/or Steve and Jules)."

How has the pig changed from his adoption to now? "Jules was always a sweet pig. He became one of those really personable pigs that everyone loves and who loves everyone. He was such a good boy." Here's Jules hiding in a sweater. Sadly, he passed away in the winter of 2005.

"Neal was a spastic 6 month old who didn't want to play nice with others. He's since grown in to a 3+ lb. pig who owns the cage. He's gotten a lot nicer with age, although he's still grumpy and picky about his food."

More about the pigs:
"Neal is grumpy and not a morning pig. He lurks in his double wide pigloo (he's huge) and waits for me to tap the roof before he comes out to eat.

"Jules was always nervous about being carried. Once, I put him at the bottom of the stairs and he hopped up. I didn't train him. He would hop up three times before he got tired. Going down stairs still required people power."
Why are you glad you didn't go to a br33der or pet store? "I have great pigs and feel good about giving an animal a new chance and a good life. There is no need for a pet pig to have a pedigree.

"Three of my current pigs are from someone who didn't stop her pet store pigs from br33ding. My mother and I took a couple of sows off her hands and one was pregnant. That sow only had one baby sow and the others were boars. We split them up. My mom only has sows. I only have boars. Both the mother and sister died very suddenly and very young. One of the brothers had a tumor removed. Inbr33ding (either by accident or for show) creates genetic problems and the pigs suffer for it later.

"Max was my last pet store pig (before I learned about rescues). He died at 4.5 yrs old. Cancer. Steve was a mis-sexed pet store purchase. I got him from a friend of a friend after she discovered the mistake (her "sow" got her sow pregnant). Besides being mis-sexed, pigs are frequently sick from pet stores."

Advice and personal experience on introducing loved ones to the pigs: "Kids are easy. Pigs are cute. Kids like cute. Pigs make cute sounds, they look cute when they eat, they are soft. All I had to do was introduce them.

"My husband likes the pigs because I like the pigs. He's a softie when it comes down to it. It's really sweet to see him try to feed them and befriend them. He was so supportive when Steve and then Jules were sick.

"It also helps to have a good "pigbassador" - a good, calm pig that doesn't freak out around people. Steve and Jules and now Gus are good pigbassadors."

Thank you to RavenShade and to all adopters! You're life savers.

New Adoption Blog

Hey folks, I've started another blog for PA/NY/NJ/WV guinea pigs. It's based on a thread over at GuineaLynx. Since I'm not familiar with the area, I would really appreciate you helping me out with shelters you know of, or any source of homeless guinea pigs (non-br33der, non-pet store). And please, let me know what you like and dislike about this blog, and what you think I'm missing.

The new blog is here: http://adoptaguineapig2.blogspot.com/ and it's really just gotten started.

MD-Humane Society of Baltimore County-New Sow

ADOPTED! I love all the rabbits and guinea pigs at the Humane Society of Baltimore County. They have a professional photographer take the animals' photos, but they are gorgeous looking on their own. This new sow, yet to be named, is no exception. Also, if you live near Reisterstown click on the Humane Society of Baltimore County link to your right-there are updates on some guineas who are already there.

This sweetie is a small adult who is friendly and easy to handle-sounds like she's well socialized to people. She's two years old and described as beautiful and sweet. I believe it!

VA-Craigslist, disaster post, two guinea pigs

LISTING EXPIRED. God this post is terrible. Leesburg, VA, two guinea pigs for fr33. Being given away because of the child's allergies (sounds like an impulse pet store buy-the sticker is still on the litter tray). They offer an exercise ball (These can kill your guinea pig), a salt lick (guinea pigs aren't deer-huge no no), water bowl (they mean water bottle, right?), calcium (they mean vitamin C, right?), a food dispenser full of crap food, and don't worry, the guinea pigs are clean-they were bathed weekly. Guinea pigs are self cleaning. Unless there's clumpy or matted fur, a guinea pig really only needs a bath once or twice a year. They hate baths, generally, and because of their fragile immune systems wet fur can lead to a URI and death.

The guinea pigs also come with a guinea pig book. Don't trust anything it says.

IN RESCUE!

UPDATE: Hooray! I'm the jerk here, not the posters. I sent them a letter about the dangers of offering a guinea pig for fr33, and they're taking down the listing and posting the ad in more guinea pig specific places. That's wonderful. I encourage any one in any area to contact posters who are giving any animal away for fr33 about other possibilities. I have a form letter I send, please let me know if you'd like a copy of it by emailing adoptaguineapig @ gmail.com.

Another sn@ke food ad in Clarksburg, MD. Very sweet white and brown guinea pig, 1 and a 1/2 years old. Comes with her cage, food, water bottle and little house. Has never bitten the poster's children and has been "well taken care of." I'm sending the guinea pig mental vibes to get a good bite in on the poster before she goes. They have to downsize and so they don't have space. Those small petstore cage do take up a lot of room . Describes a carrot diet for the guinea pig-guinea pigs should have carrots sparingly-they're too sugary for daily consumption.

MD-Craigslist, Rockville, Two GPs

LISTING EXPIRED. This Rockville poster is getting a dog, so the guinea pigs have got to go. (Just FYI: here's a good thread from GuineaLynx on dog/cavy compatibility). The guinea pigs are four months old and "include all accessory and resort." I don't know what that means-if they really have some sort of guinea pig resort it's worth the hundred dollars adoption fee they're charging. But so are the guinea pigs, look at these adorable cavies:

The poster doesn't say their sex-that means you might have a pregnancy watch on your hands. Six guinea pigs for the price of two!
