Girl in Chesapeake Animal Control Center, VA

LISTING REMOVED. This listing for an unnamed guinea pig, just number 56283, at the Chesapeake Animal Control Center, makes me So Very Sad.

If you are a good person, or moreso, an animal loving person, or moreso, a guinea pig loving person, please see if you have room for this poor girl in your heart and home. This is a high-kill shelter.

Sows and unknown in Montgomery County, MD

The Montgomery County Humane Society has a number of guinea pigs available.

The two guinea pigs below are being fostered on behalf of MCHS. Click on their link and scroll down to find out how to learn more about them.

LISTING REMOVED. Alice and Marsha are the two beautiful guineas pictured immediately below. Alice (pictured first) is the mother of Marsha (second). Alice is one of those amazing guineas who loves lap time. She's very tame, sweet and cuddly, and has been known to purr. She's two years old. Marsha is seven months old, very active, and best friends with her mom. Her listing describes her as "a real charmer." She loves lap time as well. They're being fostered, please click on the link to learn more about this wonderful bonded pair.

LISTING REMOVED. Squealer and LISTING REMOVED. Swirly are another Mother/Daughter pair, but MCHS is not insisting on adopting them together. Squealer, pictured first, is a one year old guinea pig who had a litter when she was just six months old. The poor girl! She really needs a forever home where she won't have to go through another delivery--these can be deadly for the mother and the guineas add to the already enormous homeless guinea population. Swirly is her six month old daughter (her three month old daughter was already adopted). I think it would be great if the two got to go together.

Two boys, One Girl-More Arlington, VA

Three more guineas from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. They are all featured on PetHarbor; you can find them there by searching by their ID number.

LISTING REMOVED. Joe's PetHarbor ID is #A015339. He's a cutie, 6 months old and not neutered. He's a pink eyed white, and they have a lot harder time getting adopted :(

LISTING REMOVED. Moe's Petharbor ID is ID# A015338. He's a handsome, unaltered six month old boar. He's a tricolor.

LISTING REMOVED. Penny's Petharbor ID is ID#A015044. She's one year old, and a pretty tricolor sow. She isn't spayed.

MD Sow-Anne Arundel County SPCA

The Anne Arundel County SPCA has a beautiful sow named ADOPTED! Kisses (scroll down for her picture):

Kisses is six months old and brown with an orange stripe. I think she's adorable. The bedding she's on, by the way, is Carefresh, which is a really great bedding material. Read about more bedding choices here. Important: never use cedar, pine that's not kiln dried, or anything like straw that could cause an eye injury or hurt the guineas' footpads.

Guinea Pig Home Listings

The next listings are from Guinea Pig Home, a great website for anything guinea related.

Two sweet males in Easton, MD. Ad states that picture will be posted soon. They're short hairs and bonded. They live in a cavy cage, which is a good sign. Owner got too busy with work and couldn't give them enough attention.

IN RESCUE!Three bonded boars and one female in Harford, MD. The three boars are pictured below. The brown boar and gray boar are especially bonded, so they have to be adopted together, ideal if you adopt all three. They are all about two or three years old. Unsure age on the female, she came from a Petstore. Please don't buy/save/rescue guinea pigs from petstores, it only leaves a space for a new guinea pig to be treated terribly. The guys are supposedly good with kids and have been around dogs. Please be very careful with predatory animals around guinea pigs.

IN RESCUE!Two Beautiful Baltimore Sows Gwenevieve is on the left, and Giselle is on the right. Giselle (doesn't she look like a model?) is more of a people pig than a piggy-pig. She is all about petting and cuddles. Gwenevieve is louder and sillier and also very affectionate. The two do not have to go together. They are older pigs but their listing says "oh gosh you would never know it!" Please click the link for more info.

VA,MD-GPAN Listings

Another place to look for listings is the Guinea Pig Adoption Network.

Kate
is a one or two year old piggie, reportedly healthy, and is orange and white. She lives in Yorktown, VA. The reason for adoption is that the poster's rabbit doesn't like the guinea pig. I'm not sure why they should be interacting; one of the big guinea pig rules is not to keep a rabbit and guinea together. Rabbits play far too rough, and can easily break a guinea pigs fragile bones.

Dustin
is a very sweet 18 month old boy who is not getting the attention he deserves at his current home in Elkridge, MD. He is white, brown, and gray.

Whiteboy and Hairball
are playful bonded boys of unknown age. White Boy is a white short hair, and Hairball is, well, hairier and brown, white, and gray. They live in Suitland, MD.

Some Craiglist Ads-MD/VA/DC

I haven't followed up to see if these guinea pigs are still available. Fall in love at your own risk! If you are looking for a healthy guinea pig (while knowing any guinea pig can experience health difficulties in his/her life and that regardless you should find an exotics vet and bills may be high for any vet treatment), and aren't in a position to play rescuer, here are some things to look for:

No excessive eye discharge (they naturally produce a milky discharge for the purpose of cleaning)
No wet nose
Normal bald spots behind the ear are the only representations of hair loss/hair thinning
Nails aren't curled under or excessively long
The guinea pig isn't frequently scratching itself (could be mites, which are easily treated)
If a female has a prounounced aerial pear shape, she may be pregnant
Remember: pet stores frequently missex guinea pigs. Check here to make sure you're getting what the ad implies.
Make sure the teeth are even and not overgrown. Check here to see what to look and look out for.

Read more about how a healthy piggy should appear here. All of GuineaLynx, including its forums, is an amazing resource for guinea pig care.

LISTING REMOVED. Two one year old boars in Blacksburg, VA. Small adoption fee, includes cage and supplies. Should be taken together. Being rehomed because of grad school.

LISTING REMOVED. Two two month old girls in Northern VA / Triangle / Quantico $10 adoption fee for each. Their picture makes me sad, as does their being rehomed. If they're only two months old, they can't have gotten much time at their (hopefully) first home. Can you give them their forever home?

LISTING EXPIRED. Don't Mess With Texels I don't have much respect for people who give away their pets on the internet, instead of finding a no-kill shelter or rescue to take them, but at least this person is asking an adoption fee. Maybe that seems unreasonable for some people, but an adoption fee somewhat secures the future of your pet. And look at this gorgeous guy. He's described as a sweet boy who loves to be held and cuddled. He comes with a C&C cage which is the best type of cage there is-pet store cages are notoriously too small. He also comes with a bunch of other supplies.

LISTING REMOVED.The type of ad where pets wind up as test subjects Fr33 two year old guinea pig with a sweet personality, loves to cuddle. Comes with cage and accessories. If she ends up as sn@ke food, her "adopters" won't care about the great package deal. Fredericksburg, VA.

LISTING REMOVED. A sad ad for four sn@ke meals Fr33: two sets of guinea pigs (sets?), must be taken in pairs. No description of the guinea pigs other than that they are well taken care of. Offering them for fr33 with no description must be the poster's last act of love toward his or her beloved pets. Portsmouth, VA. Far away? It's worth a drive to keep them alive.

LISTING EXPIRED. An eight month old, Catonsville, MD The guinea pig is said to need a new home. Let's hope that's what he/she gets, considering there's no adoption fee or any real description beyond "light brown with medium length hair." Toys and cage included. I worry the "adopters" won't need them.

LISTING EXPIRED.Two sisters in Wendell, VA The poster says they must be taken together, but s/he's offering them for fr33. People who get guinea pigs for food like getting more than one-this isn't a protection a poster is making for their pets. The guinea pigs are close to two, one is more people friendly than the other but the other would probably warm up if given attention. The poster is allergic to them, and saved them herself. I feel for this situation, but the best way to assure a good home for your pet is to take it to a no-kill shelter or a rescue--or not impulsively purchase/take animals. They come with cage and water bottle.

LISTING REMOVED. Eight month old boar in Richmond, VA Anakin is orange and black, very sociable, used to kids. Comes with cage, pigloo, water bottle, food and bedding. Giving him up because new apartment can't have pets. Fr33 to good home--you can never really tell who has the good home, and who has the good lab. Please charge an adoption fee.

LISTING REMOVED. Harford, MD-Three guinea pigs Poster prefers all go together, but can separate the trio to a pair and a single. The single boy must go to a home with another single boy. Comes with cages, hay, food, veggies, and toys. Described as very sweet. Used to kids and pets. Can transport. No adoption fee, but will screen. Let's hope s/he asks the right questions--even then, the faux-adopters know the right answers.

ADOPTED! An ad that terrified me In case it gets taken down, the title said "Fr33 Guinea Pig"and the listing read, in full, "Just like the title says, fr33 guinea pig and cage to good home." LUCKILY this guinea pig was genuinely adopted by a caring person. I thought this guinea pig was a goner for sure. Amazing. Please don't count on your "fr33 to good home" guinea pig being so lucky.

LISTING EXPIRED. Hampton, VA 1 y.o. girl Very sweet girl who loves attention, but does take a few days to warm up to people (most gps are like this, in my experience). Comes with cage, food dish, bedding, water bottle, food and tunnels. She loves to tunnel with her toys and watch T.V. with her poster. Poster is charging a very reasonable adoption fee.

LISTING REMOVED. Bon Air, VA, Mother and Daughter, Horrifying: One long hair, one short hair, comes with cage. "Great birthday gift for a child." Really? Is that how you got them in your home? It seems like the child got sick of them, like almost every kid will do, ever, because they aren't taught how to really take care of the pig and they wanted a dog or a pony instead. Get your kid a bike, they can't kill that. And the guinea pigs are being sold for a $1, which is about how much they'd cost at a bait shop. Which is likely what they'll turn in to.

IN A RESCUE! Three pigs, Baltimore/Towson, MD Wants the pigs to go together, if separated that's okay (you may have to deal with some depression if you do this). Must go ASAP according to poster. $10 rehoming fee for each (I would recommend higher, to avoid your pets becoming lab specimens, but at least it's a showing). Can purchase cages, toys, water bottles, and food for $50 if you get all three guinea pigs. If you have the space, time, and money, I recommend it--you have to have at least two guinea pigs (unless you have a certified solo), and three is much more fun, for them and you.

Two piggies in PA

This boy and girl are in Landenberg, PA, but CompAnimals has a mailing address in MD-I figured I would post them.

ADOPTED! Squeaker is a small, young calico boy. His listing reads: "He was abandoned at the gate of a local SPCA. Squeaker is an outgoing guy & enjoys getting out of his cage to explore the office. A fun companion!" Guinea Pigs are social animals, so if you have a solo boar or a spayed pig, try them with this guy. Be patient for the best piggy friend forever results that may occur.

ADOPTED! Bubba is a cute lady who is apparently big enough to earn her name. Her listing says that she was given to the SPCA when her family didn't want her anymore. Can you give her a forever home? It also says she likes carrots, which are great for an occasional treat.

Norfolk, VA Shelter-boy and girl

The Norfolk, VA SPCA has a beautiful black and white pair (not bonded).

NO LONGER AVAILABLE. Napoleon looks like a wise old man to me. However, he's described as young and small. I love this guy.

ADOPTED! Betty is young and small, according to her Petfinder listing. There's a second picture there of her adorable face and beautiful markings in close up.

Fairfax, VA shelters-boys and girls

POST REMOVED. The Humane Society of Fairfax County has Mr. Porkie, or Porkie, a cute one year old who is described as shy-most guinea pigs are though, in shelters. They warm up once in their Forever Home! I can't be sure, but it looks like Porkie might have a crest-these are the best for petting (and kissing).

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter currently has four guinea pigs:

WITH A RESCUE! Zane is ten months old and unaltered. He's featured on PetHarbor where his ID is A024093.

WITH A RESCUE! Zeke is two years old and unaltered. I think he's adorable. His PetHarbor ID is A024094.

The poor two guinea pigs below are unnamed and unsexed. These wonderful looking cavies won't fare as well in the adoption process without that information. Please help them if you can. UPDATE These beautiful guinea pigs are girls!

LISTING REMOVED. Marty is described as young, large, and altered. And look what he can do!
