MD-Five baby guinea pigs

LINK REMOVED-five baby abby guinea pigs being dumped-three are black, two are black and white.

Thank you to the person who sent this to me! Eff off to br33ders, pet stores selling pets, and people who dump their pets for fr33 knowing the dangers.

VA-Craigslist, two listings

POST EXPIRED. Newport News (near Norfolk) pudgy little one year old boar. Being dumped because the poster adopted a Jack Russell-now the guinea pig can't have a fr33 range house. I would imagine he'd rather have a dog-proofed cage then the latest chemical make up of shimmery shimmer lip stain injected in to his skin. The cage he's in has a mesh bottom which the poster admits is bad for guinea pigs, but oh so easy to clean! Yeah, another pain in the keister is bumblefoot. And C&C cages clean like a dream. Comes with supplies and leftover food.

BIG thanks to the person who emailed the above listing to me. Because they had spelled "guinea pig" wrong, it didn't show up in my searching. If you ever see a listing, search engine, shelter, rescue, site, article, anything you think belongs on this site, just email me at adoptaguineapig @ gmail.com.

POST DELETED. Mechanicsville (near Richmond). Hell if I know what's going on in this ad, so I'm going to repost it here:

VA-Friends of Homeless Animals

On the other adoptaguineapig I featured rabbits, by accident, so I figure I'll just go all the way:

Adopt Noah the Katrina Survivor!
In in effort to help place some of the dogs who have waiting far too long to find their forever homes, FOHA has started campaigning for our long-term residents. Our current featured dog is Noah, a Hurricane Katrina survivor.
Poor Noah has had a tough life... he lost his home and family when the hurricane struck, but a group of caring volunteers found him in the water, and took him to safety. Noah was driven all the way from Louisiana to FOHA's shelter in the hope that he could eventually be reunited with his family. When they couldn't be found, Noah was put up for adoption.
It is hard to believe that this sweet boy is still waiting to be adopted. He is a friendly, snuggly, playful boy whose whole body wiggles when he sees someone coming over to pet him. He loves people of all ages, and gets along well with most dogs after a proper introduction.
Our goal is to have Noah adopted into a loving home in time for the holidays. If you are looking for a faithful companion who will always be there for you, please consider this handsome boy. He will thank you every day with wet doggie kisses, a wagging tail, and those big, grateful eyes.
To adopt Noah, please call our adoption line at 703-385-0224 or email doginfo@foha.org.
If you would like to help Noah, but can't adopt him at this time, please spread the word about this great dog. Noah's campaign poster can be downloaded <HERE>.

VA-Craigslist-two ads

I posted this very brief guide to adopting a guinea pig from Craigslist a while ago, but I thought it was worth posting again. Plus the two ads I'm going to post are so brief I've got space to fill. Add your own suggestions in the comments section!

If you are looking for a healthy guinea pig (while knowing any guinea pig can experience health difficulties in his/her life and that regardless you should find an exotics vet and bills may be high for any vet treatment), and aren't in a position to play rescuer, here are some things to look for:

* No excessive eye discharge (they naturally produce a milky discharge for the purpose of cleaning)
* No wet nose
* Normal bald spots behind the ear are the only representations of hair loss/hair thinning
* Nails aren't curled under or excessively long
* The guinea pig isn't frequently scratching itself (could be mites, which are easily treated)
* If a female has a prounounced aerial pear shape, she may be pregnant
* Remember: pet stores frequently missex guinea pigs. Check here to make sure you're getting what the ad implies.
* Make sure the teeth are even and not overgrown. Check here to see what to look and look out for.

Read more about how a healthy piggy should appear here. All of GuineaLynx, including its forums, is an amazing resource for guinea pig care.

LISTING EXPIRED. Bonded pair of NoVa males available for adoption. Very social and a lot of fun!

UPDATE: The below ad has been posted here, at GPAN.

LISTING REMOVED. Sn@ke food ad here. Two six month old boars; Zack is black and white, and Jack is white and tan. These guinea pigs are located near Fort Belvoir, which is near Richmond.

MD-Craigslist, boar

LISTING EXPIRED. In Rockville, MD, people also don't know how to take care of guinea pigs. They are offering a guinea pig and hamster for fr33. The guinea pig is described is looking like a miniature cow (mine look like that and they aren't even white and black spotted, like this guy). He also has a little bit of orange-sounds like a cutie. This boar is happy, sociable, and likes kids. He comes with a cage, hay, food, water bottle and-here's the rub-a feeder which you only have to fill up with food every three weeks: "very convenient." Yikes.

A Happy Adoption Story

Well, I started thinking that posting so many homeless guinea pigs could get depressing. So I made a shout out to my good e-friends at GuineaLynx for some happy adoption stories. The first Adoption Profile I'm going to share is about RavenShade and two of her piggies.

Ravenshade has helped the homeless guinea pig population by donating time, supplies, and money to rescues/shelters. She also transports guinea pigs to their forever homes [like to drive? Help a piggy train!] and encourages people not to br33d or buy. The origins of Jules and Neal are local. Jules is from Montgomery County Humane Society and Neal is from Small Angels.

What made you opt to adopt: "There's no reason to br33d or buy when so many pigs of every shape, color, age, gender, br33d and size are looking for good homes. We did once br33d and that cost us the lives of some very special pigs."

How she prepared for the pigs: "I've had pigs a long time, so I already had the supplies. I created quarantine cages for them when they first arrived (already had Steve and/or Steve and Jules)."

How has the pig changed from his adoption to now? "Jules was always a sweet pig. He became one of those really personable pigs that everyone loves and who loves everyone. He was such a good boy." Here's Jules hiding in a sweater. Sadly, he passed away in the winter of 2005.

"Neal was a spastic 6 month old who didn't want to play nice with others. He's since grown in to a 3+ lb. pig who owns the cage. He's gotten a lot nicer with age, although he's still grumpy and picky about his food."

More about the pigs:
"Neal is grumpy and not a morning pig. He lurks in his double wide pigloo (he's huge) and waits for me to tap the roof before he comes out to eat.

"Jules was always nervous about being carried. Once, I put him at the bottom of the stairs and he hopped up. I didn't train him. He would hop up three times before he got tired. Going down stairs still required people power."
Why are you glad you didn't go to a br33der or pet store? "I have great pigs and feel good about giving an animal a new chance and a good life. There is no need for a pet pig to have a pedigree.

"Three of my current pigs are from someone who didn't stop her pet store pigs from br33ding. My mother and I took a couple of sows off her hands and one was pregnant. That sow only had one baby sow and the others were boars. We split them up. My mom only has sows. I only have boars. Both the mother and sister died very suddenly and very young. One of the brothers had a tumor removed. Inbr33ding (either by accident or for show) creates genetic problems and the pigs suffer for it later.

"Max was my last pet store pig (before I learned about rescues). He died at 4.5 yrs old. Cancer. Steve was a mis-sexed pet store purchase. I got him from a friend of a friend after she discovered the mistake (her "sow" got her sow pregnant). Besides being mis-sexed, pigs are frequently sick from pet stores."

Advice and personal experience on introducing loved ones to the pigs: "Kids are easy. Pigs are cute. Kids like cute. Pigs make cute sounds, they look cute when they eat, they are soft. All I had to do was introduce them.

"My husband likes the pigs because I like the pigs. He's a softie when it comes down to it. It's really sweet to see him try to feed them and befriend them. He was so supportive when Steve and then Jules were sick.

"It also helps to have a good "pigbassador" - a good, calm pig that doesn't freak out around people. Steve and Jules and now Gus are good pigbassadors."

Thank you to RavenShade and to all adopters! You're life savers.

New Adoption Blog

Hey folks, I've started another blog for PA/NY/NJ/WV guinea pigs. It's based on a thread over at GuineaLynx. Since I'm not familiar with the area, I would really appreciate you helping me out with shelters you know of, or any source of homeless guinea pigs (non-br33der, non-pet store). And please, let me know what you like and dislike about this blog, and what you think I'm missing.

The new blog is here: http://adoptaguineapig2.blogspot.com/ and it's really just gotten started.

MD-Humane Society of Baltimore County-New Sow

ADOPTED! I love all the rabbits and guinea pigs at the Humane Society of Baltimore County. They have a professional photographer take the animals' photos, but they are gorgeous looking on their own. This new sow, yet to be named, is no exception. Also, if you live near Reisterstown click on the Humane Society of Baltimore County link to your right-there are updates on some guineas who are already there.

This sweetie is a small adult who is friendly and easy to handle-sounds like she's well socialized to people. She's two years old and described as beautiful and sweet. I believe it!

VA-Craigslist, disaster post, two guinea pigs

LISTING EXPIRED. God this post is terrible. Leesburg, VA, two guinea pigs for fr33. Being given away because of the child's allergies (sounds like an impulse pet store buy-the sticker is still on the litter tray). They offer an exercise ball (These can kill your guinea pig), a salt lick (guinea pigs aren't deer-huge no no), water bowl (they mean water bottle, right?), calcium (they mean vitamin C, right?), a food dispenser full of crap food, and don't worry, the guinea pigs are clean-they were bathed weekly. Guinea pigs are self cleaning. Unless there's clumpy or matted fur, a guinea pig really only needs a bath once or twice a year. They hate baths, generally, and because of their fragile immune systems wet fur can lead to a URI and death.

The guinea pigs also come with a guinea pig book. Don't trust anything it says.

IN RESCUE!

UPDATE: Hooray! I'm the jerk here, not the posters. I sent them a letter about the dangers of offering a guinea pig for fr33, and they're taking down the listing and posting the ad in more guinea pig specific places. That's wonderful. I encourage any one in any area to contact posters who are giving any animal away for fr33 about other possibilities. I have a form letter I send, please let me know if you'd like a copy of it by emailing adoptaguineapig @ gmail.com.

Another sn@ke food ad in Clarksburg, MD. Very sweet white and brown guinea pig, 1 and a 1/2 years old. Comes with her cage, food, water bottle and little house. Has never bitten the poster's children and has been "well taken care of." I'm sending the guinea pig mental vibes to get a good bite in on the poster before she goes. They have to downsize and so they don't have space. Those small petstore cage do take up a lot of room . Describes a carrot diet for the guinea pig-guinea pigs should have carrots sparingly-they're too sugary for daily consumption.

MD-Craigslist, Rockville, Two GPs

LISTING EXPIRED. This Rockville poster is getting a dog, so the guinea pigs have got to go. (Just FYI: here's a good thread from GuineaLynx on dog/cavy compatibility). The guinea pigs are four months old and "include all accessory and resort." I don't know what that means-if they really have some sort of guinea pig resort it's worth the hundred dollars adoption fee they're charging. But so are the guinea pigs, look at these adorable cavies:

The poster doesn't say their sex-that means you might have a pregnancy watch on your hands. Six guinea pigs for the price of two!

MD-Craigslist-Eldersburg Sows

Though I'm sure the poster just put these two outside for the photo, let's go over some guinea ground rules: They Can't Live Outside! A Predator Could Knock Over That Cage And Eat Them! If You Do Take Your Guinea Pigs Outside Let Them Eat Some Untreated And Un-peed On Grass Instead Of Your Deck's Splinters!

LISTING REMOVED. Great. Two vocal bonded four year old sisters are being given away for adoption on Craigslist. If highly publicized shelters and rescues can't adopt out guinea pigs older than three, I worry about this pair's chances for getting a good forever home. They aren't super socialized to people yet-also will hurt their odds. But the small adoption fee does come with their cage, bedding, water bottles, dishes, food, alfalfa (the girls are too old for eating alfalfa and should absolutely not have this)-maybe this will get 'em picked up. Being rehomed because of asthma. One's a Peruvian. This makes me sad as hell.

VA-Craigslist, two sows

POST EXPIRED. Two precious sows being given away in Hopewell, VA (near Richmond). Opal and Pearl are two years old and have lived together their entire life, so they have to be adopted together. They're sweet, loving, and easygoing. They come with pigloo, cage, water bottle, and food dishes.

Christ, I hope these actually get adopted. Sent the owner a letter. I don't understand how people can part with pets-pets should be able to part with people though.

VA-Craigslist, Norfolk boar

FLAGGED FOR REMOVAL. Fun, playful gray and white boar in Norfolk being rehomed due to new addition in the family. Congratulations to humans, sadulations for piggie. He's playful, loving, and loves to roam, including running up and down the stairs. Gives guinea kisses while being pet (this is an amazing feeling). Comes with cage, house, water bottle, food dish, other toys, food and bedding, all for a small adoption fee. He sounds like a winner.

DANGER: he comes with a plastic ball to run around in. Petstores market these toward people for guinea pigs and chinchillas, but they actually can be deadly. GPs can break the bones in their feet, spine, and also many become quite frightened. Chinchillas can overheat incredibly quickly and die. Do not buy these for animals other than a hamster.

MD-Montgomery County Humane Society-Boar/Sow

Oh wow, MCHS has done it this time. These two are amazing looking, and they have a very unfortunate background.

LISTINGS REMOVED. Bobby (T) and Carol (B) were living under a porch before they were brought in to the Rescue. It's incredibly fortunate they were found before the weather turned-it also makes me worry for all the guinea pigs who won't be found. A fundamental guinea pig fact is that they can't live outdoors. These two are both small (I'm not surprised) and estimated to be ten months old. They do not have to be adopted together.

VA-Craigslist-18 Guinea Pigs

Well it's October 27, 2007, and despite what my links say (I can't figure out how to set the damn time), by one o'clock in the afternoon 18 guinea pigs have been listed today on Craigslist. Please add sarcasm and funny jokes and criticism yourself, this was overwhelming for me.

LISTING REMOVED. Portsmouth, VA: five babies and mother Specifically orders rescues not to contact her, because she can find good homes for them herself. Well, that's why you use Craigslist, the site that brings Furries together! (I'm not talking about animals right now). The babies are ten weeks old, three girls, two boys (I would double check the sexing). Boys can go alone, girls go in pairs (baby/baby, baby/mom). Small adoption fee. Pictures available on request.

LISTING REMOVED. Richmond, VA: single sow Poor female guinea pig being rehomed because youngest child is allergic. Small adoption fee for her and her stuff. As I've written before, guinea pigs are allergic to being dead.

WITH A RESCUE! Roanoke, VA jerk has eleven guinea pigs, no common sense Don't know if he's a hoarder or a br33der, my hunch is he's an idiot. Has boys, girls, two month olds to two year olds. Found out the hard way they like to multiply. I guess this guy never got the birds and the bees talk. Or watched Bob Barker. Small adoption fee. "2 have already been spoken for and they wont last long..." Finally, some honesty on Craigslist.

MD/DC/VA-MGPR-Guineas/Donation

Hurrah, Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue has new guineas! But first, a little plug for this coolest of the cool organizations that I foster for:

CFC Federal Campaign

If you are a federal employee in the Washington, DC area, MGPR is an authorized charity for Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). You can find us under "local Agencies" using organization number 94742.

Help keep us all in fancy cars and cigars, lofts downtown and evening gowns! Actually your donation would help us buy food for starved animals, pay for life-saving medical care, and allow us to pull more animals from kill shelters. Despite Ellen-related rumors to the contrary, every volunteer for a rescue or shelter is spending loads of money out-of-pocket. When people say working with animals is rewarding, they don't mean financially.

On to the guinea pigs, who can be found on MGPR's available pigs page.

ADOPTED! This is Blondie. My boyfriend and I were trying to come up with Blondie jokes for her. His was: "Don't have a heart of glass, adopt this guinea pig." Mine was, "Like Debbie Harry in the 80s, this guinea pig is in her prime." They're both terrible. I'm sorry Blondie the guinea pig. You're so beautiful and sweet and I can't come up with a tagline for you. Don't punish Blondie the guinea pig for our faults-please give her a forever home! She lives with Rosie.

No longer available Here's Rosie, who I think is so beautiful. This whole group of four is gorgeous, really. Rosie lives with Blondie, and is looking for a forever home. Can we find her one? We Can Do It!

ADOPTED! Felix is one handsome boy. He looks so much like Rosie it's remarkable. Felix has two namesakes, Felix the Cat and Felix on the Odd Couple. Felix is potty trained in a litter box, and very tidy. From my experience, this makes him a miracle pig.

ADOPTED! Mr. Bill (now paired with another pig) is a gorgeous tricolor abby gentlemen. I have not met him in person yet, but when I do I am going to hold him and pet him for hours (permission willing from his foster mom). He is so handsome and charming.

VA-Roanoke Valley SPCA-two sows

IN A RESCUE! Roanoke Valley SPCA just got up pictures of two pretty sows. You can see their photos and listings for yourself by going here.

Tina has another photo and it was hard deciding between the two; she looks so lovely in both. I chose this one ultimately because of its "come hither [and adopt me]" stare. Tina is two years old and now available for adoption. Won't you give this lady a forever home?

I don't know what is going on in Missty's photo, but I do know it says she has a CREST which is one of the BEST things you can find in a guinea pig (I studied poetry in college). I bet this girl is a cutie, but this photograph doesn't really show it. Give her a chance! It's the crest thing you could do.

MD-Little Wonders Animal Rescue

Here's the last update of current Little Wonders guinea pigs.

ADOPTED! ZaZa, Ava and Eva are three young gals. One is the mum and the other two are her kiddies. The babies are three months old and were born in the rescue. ADOPTED! Nathan is their brother. I think these girls are especially beautiful, particularly the one with the flame bum.

Poor ADOPTED! Nathan is living all alone because he had to be separated from the guinea sorority of his nuclear kin. Can you give him a forever home? This guy needs a new family. He's three months old.

Gus and Sam are two beautiful men-sort of like George Clooney and Taye Diggs. They are bonded (the guinea pigs, that is, I'm not in to celebrity gossip) and love attention. Well look at those boys-they deserve it!

ADOPTED! Harry is such a handsome boy-he was was found wandering outside, then taken for vet treatment. He could be dead right now, but instead he's with the caring and knowledgeable volunteers of Little Wonders. Please bring this boy into a forever home, where he won't be abandoned.

Oy vey. Lemme share with all you future Craigslist posters what company you're in if you give away your GPs for fr33 on Craigslist. This letter is not from the above person, but someone else who was sent a letter about the dangers of giving away animals for fr33, and I got permission to repost it from the recipient:

"Look, little miss do gooder.. I am perfectly capable of finding my guinea pigs good homes. and heres something to think about .. mind your own business. They are gone already. I gave the away FR33 My whole damn life I have never ran into anyone that kills black cats on Halloween, or feeds Guinea Pigs to their Sn@kes. If they have to count on Craiglist to find food for their sn@kes.. GOOD LUCK,, they won't be living too long. I'm sick to death of the animal rights activists on here and tree huggers."

MD-Montgomery County Humane Society-boar

LISTING REMOVED. Joni is a boar I've written about before, but now he finally has a picture! Right now he is at the Montgomery County Humane Society. You can find his listing on PetHarbor; he is under "I lost my pet" and his ID is #A312251. He is estimated to be two years old and has been at the shelter for four days now.

This picture makes me sad not only because you can't see handsome Joni super well, but because the food he is eating in this photo is not good food for guinea pigs. The colored pieces are equivalent to junk food-the guinea pig picks those out to eat and then he doesn't get the necessary nutrients from the regular pieces. He will become used to only eating the colored pieces, gain weight, and become sick. Quality pellets are like those made by Kleenmama's Hayloft, or Oxbow Hay Company. Remember, alfala pellets for babies and nursing/pregnant mothers, timothy based pellets for adults.

MD-Craigslist-three sows

LISTING EXPIRED. Charm City not charmed with guinea pigs-another three pigs being given up on Baltimore's Craigslist. Three sows-one is the mother and two are her pups-I would check the sex on the kiddies. Sounds like another pregnant pet store piggie. Daughter has been in charge, doesn't have time for all three because of schoolwork. Two of them are black, brown and white, one is brown and white. Friendly and adorable. Small adoption fee includes cage, leftover food and bedding, and water bottle. Remember: there should be a water bottle, hiding place, food dish, and cuddle cup for each pig, to avoid fighting.

VA-Craigslist, Sow, Woodbridge

LISTING EXPIRED. This dear sow is so pretty. I love solid colored guineas (or selfs). She is being rehomed because her owner graduated from college and now has a full time job, so the owner doesn't have time for her. Cripes! I can't imagine having a job where I couldn't take care of a guinea pig. And let's hope I don't get one-I've got to start looking soon. (But good wishes for a job will obviously be appreciated). Anyway, poor baby is sweet, friendly, good natured, and doesn't bite. Her negotiable adoption fee includes her cage, bedding, and hay. Adopt this sweetheart and get her a friend!
