MD-Craigslist-Female Pig

LISTING REMOVED. Boonsboro Area, MD: I have a feeling updating this blog will be making me irrevocably sad and angry. Anyway. Peanut is a female pig being given away because the parents' kids don't have time for her anymore. And I guess she doesn't either. I wonder if all the parents who get sweet, defenseless animals in order to teach their children responsibility punish them greatly once they give up on the animals. Somehow I doubt it.

She comes with a "tank" and vitamins. The tank is obviously very bad for a guinea pig as it does not provide adequate ventilation for the relatively respiratory systems. Somehow I doubt the "vitamins" is vitamin c. Poor pig. No mention of a rehoming fee.

LISTING REMOVED. Norfolk, VA -Cookie is a young a fellow who is being dumped because the couple had a kid. Anyway, the rehoming fee is reasonable and he comes with a bevy of items (the "food" and "bag of treats" is very suspect as I doubt they are referring to a bag of veggies and fruit, respectively). His cage is outrageously small, and I imagine it was outrageously expensive at a pet store. I really haven't a clue what that log is, but I imagine it's something that belongs in an aquarium and is not safe for guinea pigs. He should, of course, have a pigloo instead. I also see no traces of hay, which guinea pigs must have at their disposable at all times. Oh, poor sucker.

Thanks to Naomi for pointing it out.

Furthermore, this is my inaugural post.

LISTING REMOVED. Norfolk, VA: Ugh, vomit. Poster got two guinea pigs for her daughter for Christmas "and now she does not want to take care of them, she wants a bunny instead." Why not get her a BB gun so she can wreak even more havoc on the animal kingdom? Of course then she'll probably want a glock, haha oh kids. Poster is too busy to take care of the guinea pigs, so now they are being dumped for a reasonable rehoming fee on Craigslist. The poster says the pigs are both girls, "one is bigger than the other, but they are both babies." I would double check the sex and make sure that "bigger" guinea pig isn't a 6 for 1 deal. Guinea pigs come with a number of supplies; undoubtedly the cage will be too small.

And with that, I'm off! Keep looking to the stars.

LISTING REMOVED. Reston, VA: Two pigs less than a year old being rehomed, sex not specified--do a pregnancy watch. The poster describes them as very cute and friendly. The pigs are used to kids, cats, dogs, and are well socialized to people. Their reasonable adoption fee includes their cage (too small), hay, pellets, water bottle (they should have two), "food crock" (huh?), hidey home (they should have two), and a big bag of bedding (toss it if it's cedar). Pics available by request.

FLAGGED FOR REMOVAL. Virginia Beach, VA: Black and white girl, very happy and friendly, needs a new home. She is a year and a half old and comes with her cage, food, and bedding. Reason for rehoming is listed as "My daughter cannot take care of her." The next statement is not a reflection on this poster, obviously I don't know their specific reasons for rehoming the piggie girl, and this may be a tragic situation.

However in general, this is a frequent occurrence when children are given pets to learn responsibility. They find the pet too time consuming, too much work, or boring, or some combination of the three, and often parents will then take away the pet to punish the child and to, in theory, find a better home for the pig. Rather, this doesn't really teach the child responsibility--their tiresome responsibility is actually just removed from them, and the animal often winds up in inadequate housing. It reflects more on the parent's irresponsibility to not care for the pet when the child is unable or unwilling. If you adopt a pet for your child, you must be prepared to care for the pet the length of its life.

MD-Anne Arundel SPCA-Young Boar

Anne Arundel SPCA has a cute new boar named Black Jack. His picture is visible on this page if you don't mind scrolling down past some other small & furrys.

LISTING REMOVED. Black Jack is a very handsome one year old boar, which means he's past that prickly adolescence period but still young and active. His ID is #28944.

VA-Virginia Beach SPCA-new sow

In addition to the two guinea pigs already at VBSPCA, a new girl has arrived. LISTING REMOVED. Lily doesn't have a picture up yet, but she sounds like such a sweet and pretty girl. She is a two year old tricolor piggie, white, brown and the third color is not specified. Her reason for being surrendered really annoys me: "resident pet unhappy." Probably jealous of her fabulousness. Lily is used to kids and dogs, but has no experience with cats.

WITH A RESCUE! The Humane Society of Carroll County has two sister sows who have that adorable guinea way of not looking like each other at all. Pepper is the black abby, and she is two years old and used to being handled. Foxie is her sister and they are, it seems, very bonded to each other.

VA-Craigslist-Guinea Pig

* If responding to a Craigslist ad meet in a public place, or go with a friend. Google the phone number of the poster to
ensure it matches the name he or she gives *

LISTING REMOVED. Gainesville, VA: This guy either hates guinea pigs or his in-laws. Whole ad is pretty tinged with disgust, it's really weird! Okay, the poster's in-laws hate to do it, but must lovingly rehome their friend and companion of--oh wait, they need to "get rid of" their guinea pig--oh wait, ginnie pig. the guinea pig, sex not specified, comes with cage, bedding, food, pigloo (description is hilarious: "home-castle-dome whatever you call the thing the ginnie pig 'sleeps in'), water bottle, etc. Reasonable adoption fee being requested, picture available on request. Guy woke up on the wrong side of the bed this life.

LISTING REMOVED. Beltsville, MD: A family is losing their home and cannot take their beloved guinea pigs with them. How sad for everyone involved! There are four brothers who live in a large cage and have a playpen for exercising (and change of pace). They also come with their pigloos, food dishes, litter box, and water bottles. The boars are all used to kids. For more information contact the poster. This is probably counterexample #12,984 to the myth that two boars can't live together.

VA-SPCA Winchester-two adult sows

C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s to SPCA Winchester's on reaching its 100th anniversary! A neat thing I just learned from this shelter's website is that they allow volunteers under the age of 18--if you're under the age of 14 and have your parent or guardian with you, you can even walk and play with the dogs (a lot of shelters have strict 18+ rules about volunteering with the animals). This is a) a great way for parents to bond with their kids b) get experience with a type of animal before adopting c) exercise while helping homeless animals, and d) COLLEGE APPLICATIONS--boo! Snap a pic of yourself holding some cute puppy with sad eyes--Harvard will be eating out of your hand.

LISTING REMOVED. Why did I start talking about this shelter again? Oh that's right, they have two of the most adorable guinea pigs in the world available for adoption. No more information about them than that they're adult females. The crested Angel is large in build, while lovely Snowflake is medium-sized.

MD-Chesapeake Bay Guinea Pig Rescue Inc.

Well wow. Two absolutely gorgeous boys at the Annapolis, MD based rescue Chesapeake Bay Guinea Pig Rescue.

Peanut and Shaggy are long haired Peruvian boys who were given up when their family was moving out of state and couldn't take them with them. These young boars have beautiful long silkie hair. Don't let it fool you, this hair needs more upkeep than the average guinea's. You'll have to watch out for matted fur, and keep it trimmed. They should be brushed daily. But it's worth it for such sweet boys as these. These boys love lap time, but they don't love getting picked up for it. Once they get plenty of people socialization and TLC, they should take The Hand (often confused with birds by guinea pigs) more easily. They are very nice boys looking for a loving forever home.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

PLEASE don't buy a pig today.
PLEASE don't get one for fr33
or adopt one impulsively.

See my post below for why I plead this so earnestly. Give your household and give the animals the gift of long term thinking.

To avoid endorsing the impulsive procurement of animals, all ads that do not require careful screening have been temporarily removed. Shelter and rescue guinea pigs remain: everyday they need a home, once adopted they need the home everyday after.

UPDATE: These posts are being returned to the blog, be patient! It takes a bit.

SCROLL DOWN FOR NEW PIGS

Adopt A Guinea Pig is formally against giving any animal as a present. Rescues and shelters experience a huge number of surrenders the immediate months following Christmas.

Before you bring an animal in to your home, think:

What will I do if someone in my household is allergic?
What will I do if the animal gets sick?
What if the person I'm getting the animal for doesn't want/like him/her?
What will I do if my children don't care for the pet?
Do I really have room?
Am I fully aware of the needs of this animal?
If the person this animal is for loses interest, am I prepared to take on the responsibilities?
How old is the animal? How long can I expect to care for this animal?
Am I making any moves where I can't bring my animal with me?
Does the person really want this animal? Or do they want another type of pet and I'm making a compromise, at the expense of this animal?
Am I really going to buy a pet now, when there are thousands of homeless animals waiting for a home?

This might be a better gift for someone thinking they want a guinea pig:

LISTING REMOVED. : Two one and a half year old female piggies available for adoption for t00 l0w of a price. they are adorable, and because of the terms of their adoption they may already be sn@ke food, at best. And that'll break your heart.

Big thanks to the gal who posted this link over on GuineaLynx.

LISTING REMOVED. King William, VA: Sad day for VA piggies today. If you're from VA, do me a favor and give your pigs an extra veggie and pat tonight for me. Thanks. Five sows (hmm) being dumped on Craigslist. Three are two months old, one is six months old, one is eight months old. Mom and daughter purchased (two pet store purchases=two shelter deaths), mom turned out to be pregnant and gave birth to three pups (=three shelter deaths). So now they're too much work to take care of and they're being dumped. They're very sweet and cute and are handled by kids daily (potential groan). All colors and patterns. Take all five and you get their stuff. Not that the type of people who respond to these ads need it.

VA-Roanoke Valley SPCA-two girls

The Roanoke Valley SPCA has two new beautiful, crested, girl piggies. Be still my heart!

LISTING REMOVED. Eve is another beautiful girl. She and Mallie are sisters. I think Eve has the proper spoiled grumpy pig face some of them get when they're not being fed or cuddled. She is a sweet sow who loves to be held. The shelter says she is spayed. Though they're not promoting them as a bonded pair, I would consider asking about adopting them both. If they've spent their whole lives together they might want to keep up the pattern.

LISTING REMOVED. Mallie is a beautiful, socialized piggie who is about a year old. She is shy at first, but then warms right up. Imagine how comfortable and happy she would be in a forever home!

DC/VA/MD-New MGPR pigs-SUPER AMAZING WONDERFUL AND SWEET

Remember this post? These darling, sweet pigs are now available for adoption from MGPR. These pigs stayed with us for six days, so I can personally attest to how sweet and loving they are. They are, first off, very cute and beautiful at the same time. They are also big chubbos, so they are impossibly fun to hug. And they are active pigs who love each other, life, and hay. How someone could put such beautiful pigs in a box, by a dumpster, with a fr33 sign, is beyond me. These pigs are really perfect pets. I can't say enough how much I grew to love them in the short time they were here, and how I still miss them now. I'm going to add a stipulation to anyone who adopts them: they must send me pictures!

ADOPTED! Sabrina (R) and Sienna are such dear pigs. They are both spayed. Below is their photo on the MGPR site, and then I'm going to add a few pigs from when they were with us.
